THE ALL NEW OSGi Alliance 2005 Developer Forum

In the last two years, the OSGi Service Platform has become available on millions of computers. OSGi Release 4 could add billions of devices from the mobile phone industry. The OSGi Service Platform is the only widely deployed cross industry and cross hardware platform for networked applications, providing unique opportunities for developers.

The OSGi Developer Forum brings together leading OSGi experts to discuss and present information about OSGi technology and how the OSGi Service Platform provides a development environment for new applications and services. Conducted by the world's experts in their field, the Developers Conference will focus on Release 4 of the OSGi Service platform and its intersection from a development and technology perspective with J2EE, J2ME, OSCAR, Eclipse, CDC, CDLC, MIDP, MobileJava, and .NET.

Attendees will have the unique opportunity to meet and interface with the OSGi spec leads; the developers of OSCAR and Knopflerfish; the people that put the OSGi into Eclipse, and the developers/researchers that have used OSGi in their work. This is a chance for individuals and companies to hear their exciting stories and tell them what should be next.

The OSGi Developer Conference is a must attend for all developers that already use OSGi, developers that consider it, and developers that spent much of their time working on deployment issues instead of real user functionality. This is the chance to talk to the people that made specifications, but even more important, to talk to people that make OSGi work in the real world.

Through presentations, panels, and hands-on demonstrations over two full days, the Developer Conference will

  • Provide an in-depth look at Release 4 of the OSGi Service Platform. Core. Discussed are the new modularization features, localization, signing of bundles, new Permission management model, extension bundles, and the many smaller enhancements that enable the OSGi Service Platform in an even larger number of designs.

  • Present an overview of the new services of R4: Operational Device Management (based on OMA DM), Deployment Admin, Power Management, Generic Event Manager, Application Admin, Monitoring, Control Units, and the Meta Type service.

  • Demonstrate how JOnAS and OSCAR have put an OSGi framework inside a J2EE Java Application server to solve the difficult deployment problems usually encountered in J2EE.

  • Show how Eclipse (an open source software platform) as a development platform as well as an OSGi runtime can fundamentally change the way organizations and independent developers can innovate and develop software; and, how to create, manage, run, debug, and deploy bundles from within Eclipse

  • Present results of work attempting to create an OSGi-like service platform for Microsoft's .NET platform

  • Detail how to improve the robustness of the OSGi Framework and services in relation to malicious or badly coded bundles.

  • Show how to test OSGi applications using JUNIT concepts but fully distributed with the OSGi test harness.

  • Illustrate how OSGi technology and concepts are being incorporated into the Daidalos Pervasive Service Platform, which enables a wide range of service types for pervasive computing.

  • Discuss the implementation of OSGi on mobile devices, taking into account the implications of CDC and CLDC as well as the relation to MIDP

  • Propose a sub-gateway model and associated management scheme to open the service delivery chain in home gateways

  • Define how the OSGi Service Platform can be use by vehicle manufacturers to incorporate different device configurations across vehicle models and ranges, thereby reducing the flexibility and decreasing the cost.

  • Have a panel discussing the state of OSGi and where to go next

  • Further discuss the relationship with the open source community, repeating the highly successful panel of last year’s OSGi World Congress.

With the combination of world experts, cutting edge content related to OSGi and J2EE, J2ME, OSCAR, Eclipse, CDC, CDLC, MIDP, MobileJava, and .NET, and focus on 'how to' not just 'what is' the OSGi Alliance Developer Conference is a must attend for independent software developers and large and small organizations alike.
